Sampling Ria Formosa

ALGARVE BLUE CARBON

Sobre o projeto

ALGARVE BLUE CARBON project aims to investigate the current carbon sequestration and storage capacity of blue carbon ecosystems (seagrasses and salt marshes) in the four wetlands in the Algarve region: Ria de Alvor, Arade estuary, Ria Formosa, and Guadiana estuary.

Atividades

Updating the mapping of seagrass and saltmarsh areas in the Algarve's four wetlands. Sampling sediment and biomass in these ecosystems to assess carbon content and sequestration capacity. Creation of a complete blue carbon database of these four ecosystems and therefore an estimate of the total blue carbon available on the Algarve coast.

The seagrass and salt marshes of the Algarve store the equivalent of 1.58 million tonnes of carbon dioxide, an amount that corresponds to the annual emissions of 343,000 cars (5% of all vehicles in circulation in Portugal).
