Mapping Sharks

Mapping Shark's

Sobre o projeto

This project focuses on understanding the spatial ecology of two vulnerable shark species - smooth hammerheads (Sphyrna zygaena) and blue sharks (Prionace glauca) - along the southern coast of Portugal. This initiative is driven by the need to fill critical gaps in knowledge about shark behaviour, migratory pathways, and nursery habitats in a region facing significant anthropogenic pressures, including fishing and coastal development. These habitats are essential for the survival and recovery of these threatened species, making their identification and protection a conservation priority.

Atividades

The project will use advanced telemetry techniques such as acoustic and satellite tagging to monitor shark movements, residency patterns, and habitat use. By collaborating with local fishers and utilizing existing receiver networks, the study aims to map Essential Fish Habitats (EFHs) and assess their connectivity with other regions, including the Mediterranean Sea.
