PROCOAST

Sobre o projeto

Tetrodotoxin (TTX) and its analogs pose significant health risks due to their potent neurotoxic effects, primarily affecting sodium channels in excitable tissues. While TTX was first discovered in pufferfish, its presence extends to various marine organisms globally. Various bacterial species have been identified as TTX producers; however, uncertainties remain regarding the pathways through which TTX is transmitted to marine organisms. Despite European regulations prohibiting the sale of TTX-bearing fish, recent incidents have highlighted its presence in unexpected species, such as marine gastropods and bivalve molluscs. Furthermore, studies indicate rising TTX levels, possibly linked to global warming. This project aims to elucidate the microbial diversity behind TTX contamination in Portuguese marine organisms. Additionally, the project aims to isolate and evaluate the toxicity of TTX analogues, which is crucial for understanding their relative potency and assessing public health risks.

This project has received funding from FCT—Foundation for Science and Technology through a RESTART Programme - 2nd Edition (2024.04866.RESTART).
