Chen Jie 1504 (1

Chen Jie has developed her research career in fish physiology and molecular biology and is now approaching the final milestone of her PhD.

Thesis Title: The Role of Somatostatins in Fish Reproduction

Throughout her PhD journey, Chen Jie has focused on understanding how somatostatin signalling regulates the balance between metabolism, growth, and reproduction in fish. In her thesis, Chen Jie investigated the role of somatostatins using zebrafish knockout models (sst1.1, sst1.2, and sst6), revealing distinct metabolic and reproductive phenotypes linked to energy allocation strategies. Her work demonstrates that Sst signalling acts as a key bridge between metabolic state and reproductive output, influencing processes such as germ cell proliferation, fertility, and energy expenditure.

Beyond metabolism and reproduction, Chen Jie’s research also uncovered broader biological functions of the somatostatin gene family, including roles in cell migration, pancreatic function, early embryogenesis, calcium signalling, and regulation of key developmental pathways. These findings highlight somatostatins as multifunctional regulators with wide-reaching implications in vertebrate biology.
