Inês Funico Guerra has developed her research career in biotechnology and microalgae-based solutions following her Biological Engineering training at the Instituto Superior Técnico. Having completed her integrated master's degree, she is now approaching the final milestone of her PhD in Marine, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Algarve.
Thesis Title: Production and formulation of an Arthrospira platensis protein-based meat analogue
Throughout her academic and professional journey, Inês has focused on microalgae production, industrial biotechnology, and sustainable food systems. In her thesis, Inês aimed to validate a complete "pond-to-plate" industrial value chain for Limnospira platensis (formerly known as Arthrospira platensis) as a sustainable food ingredient for meat analogues. By addressing key industrial challenges, including establishing a reliable biomass supply in a temperate climate, Inês developed an economically viable biorefinery process to valorize the biomass, and confirm the functional performance of the resulting ingredients in a high moisture extruded product.
As she reaches this important milestone, we invite the CCMAR community to come together and support Inês in this significant moment of her scientific career.
