This year the EAS Student Group Ibrahim Okumus Award, was won by Vasco Mota a PhD student from Wageningen University and Algarve Center for Marine Sciences (CCMAR).

Vasco Mota is working on Recirculation Aquaculture Systems (RAS) and their accumulation of substances such as steriods. This project aims to investigate: 1) to which level steroids accumulate in RAS water, 2) the effects of steroids accumulation in water on fish growth and welfare and 3) the role of the different RAS treatment units in steroids removal and deconjugation. This project will contribute to a better understanding of the process of steroids accumulation and bioavailability in the water and to the development of RAS.

According to Vasco Mota, "aquaculture Europe conferences are always exceptional opportunities to share the latest research results, to have fruitful scientific discussion and to expand the professional network. Bearing this in mind, I decided to present part of my PhD work in a poster, due to which I was fortunate to be awarded as best student poster contribution by EAS Student Group. I would like to acknowledge Rhodes in Greece and all the people involved in this work; this award is theirs as well. Thanks!"

Nowadays, Vasco Mota is doing his PhD and has an FCT fellow, between Wageningen University and Algarve Center for Marine Sciences (CCMAR). At CCMAR is being oriented by Profesor Adelino Canário and Catarina Martins (PhD).
Vasco also has his Master Degree in Aquaculture and Fisheries at Algarve University.
