SEAWEED AD

Sobre o projeto

Application of metagenomic methods and development of fermentation technologies to select and study an optimum microbial inoculum and define seaweed processing conditions (including detoxification) for the production of methane biofuel from the anaerobic digestion of seaweeds. In addition, the fractionation and characterisation of seaweed antimicrobials and other potential biopharmaceuticals released by bacterial enzymic hydrolysis will be assessed with a consideration as to their add-on value in anaerobic digestion of seaweed.

CCMAR was involved in

- Work Package 2: Review the distribution of dominant species of seaweed in Scotland in particular and on the Atlantic sea coast of Europe, including Portugal. Determine the composition of the most prevalent seaweeds: concerning polysaccharides and other carbon sources for anaerobic digestion as well as the presence of toxic compounds interfering with anaerobic digestion;

- Work Package 3: Fermenter studies

- Work Package 4: Application and development of metagenomic methods to identify bacterial and archaeal species in anaerobic digestion inocula and carry out temporal studies on inocula during anaerobic digestion of seaweed

- Work Package 5: Fractionation and removal of toxic seaweed components before anaerobic digestion
