Molecular Biology
A platform for exploring the mechanisms of life at the molecular level
The Molecular Biology Platform is a space dedicated to the study of DNA and RNA in marine organisms, with the aim of better understanding life in the ocean and supporting conservation, sustainability and innovation in marine sciences.
Using modern technologies and a specialised team, the Platform analyses marine organisms, from microorganisms, algae, plants, invertebrates and fish, contributing to the knowledge of marine biodiversity, the monitoring of endangered species, the detection of pathogens and environmental quality control.
We work with scientific, educational and industrial entities
We provide laboratory services and technical support for projects related to marine biotechnology, aquaculture, environmental monitoring and marine resource enhancement, both nationally and internationally.

What types of services can we find on this platform?
Among the main equipment and techniques available, the following stand out:
- DNA analysis for species identification;
- PCR and real-time PCR for detection and study of specific gene expression;
- Extraction and quantification of genetic material (DNA and RNA);
- Sanger sequencing and Next Generation Sequencing.
Molecular taxonomic identification
Technique: Sanger sequencing
Application: Aquaculture and Biotechnology
The molecular identification of marine organisms is an essential tool for aquaculture and biotechnology, contributing to genetic improvement, health control and the discovery of new bioactive resources.
Microbiome analysis
Technique: Next Generation Sequencing
Application: Aquaculture and Biotechnology
The characterisation of the microbiome associated with marine organisms has important implications for aquaculture and biotechnology, enabling the monitoring of host health, disease prevention, and the prospecting of microorganisms with enzymatic, antimicrobial, or bioactive properties.
Detection of pathogens
Technique: PCR
Application: Aquaculture
The detection of pathogens in marine organisms is essential for aquaculture, enabling the prevention of disease outbreaks, reducing economic losses, and ensuring the sustainability and safety of aquaculture production.
Detection and quantification of pathogens
Technique: qPCR
Application: Aquaculture
The detection and quantification of pathogens in marine organisms is essential for aquaculture, as it allows for the anticipation of health problems, improved disease control, and protection of production viability.
