MARHAB

Project Summary

MARHAB’s goal is to improve the conservation status of marine ecosystems in the Kattegat-Skagerrak region and beyond by applying an ecosystem perspective on the ability to restore and maintain marine habitats protected under the EU Habitats Directive, and further by demonstrating pathways to improve the definition of “favorable conservation status” of these and similar habitats.

Project Activities

CCMAR is responsible for WP6: Threats, indicators, and shortcomings to achieve favorable conservation status.

In WP6, we will characterize and conduct an in-depth assessment of existing Northern European MPAs, and develop guidelines for implementation of future MPAs and improvement of existing ones. Despite being late in some conservation strategies, this region is highly reliant on fisheries and has a vast experience in fisheries management. Thus, with political will informed by scientific findings, this region can represent an innovative and relevant example, transferable to other regions, on reconciling conservation and fisheries management; such demonstrations are urgent and central for MPAs to be widely accepted and supported.
