Transmissible cancers, or contagious cancers, are somatic cell lineages transmitted between individuals by transferring living cancer cells. Unlike viral, bacterial, or parasitic infections, these cancer cells themselves establish and form new tumours in new hosts. Common in marine bivalves, where they manifest as a leukemia (hemic neoplasia), these cells act like metastatic cells, leaving hosts to infect others via the marine environment. This talk will cover recent discoveries in the field.

Alicia is a Spanish biologist and bioinformatician specialized in genomics of marine contagious cancers. She is currently an MSCA fellow in France.
