We are pleasure to announce the multidisciplinary workshop “WeOcean: The Planetary Organism”, which will take place from May 4th to 6th at the University of Algarve (Penha Campus).

Vision

This workshop will delve into the concept that each human being, and humanity as a whole, is part of a much more complex entity, planet Earth. The idea of the Earth as a living organism – with the Ocean as its central and essential component – is a very old one but remains away from the trending topics in international scientific gatherings. Today’s amount of available data advocates revisiting this idea, from the Ocean and Earth scientific perspectives but also incorporating other creative approaches, including philosophy, Arts and ArtificialIntelligence.

Organization details

This event is promoted by EuroMarine through the TransOcean long-term working group, co-organized by the Univ. Algarve, CCMAR, Institut de Ciències del Mar and Associaciò SeaWilding, supported by SEA-EU, Euromarine and several other international institutions.

The 3-days multidisciplinary workshop will gather a diversity of marine and social scientists, philosophers, creative artists and collectives, artificialintelligence experts and students around ocean protection and the extraordinary message of our “belonging to a larger living organism”, aiming for higher “harmony with nature”, with expected high social impact in terms of global equity and sustainability.

More details on the organization, lists of invited speakers and artists and programme can be find at the dedicated WeOcean webpage.

Formats

The workshop will have a mixed presentationdebate format, which will include invited talks, short presentations and open debates, which will be organized around three main thematic sessions:

  • Session 1: The Living Ocean  A renewed understanding of the living planet

  • Session 2: Expanding Reality - New approximations to our belonging to the living planet

  • Session 3: A Common Future? - The social implications of being part of the living planet

In addition, participants can register to optional active meditation sessions (all mornings, at Penha Campus), a field session including a guided walk through a natural coastal area and sensory-participatory creative activities near the beach (Tuesday 5th May in the afternoon), and the participatory public concert “WeOcean” at the Penha Campus (Monday 4th May, at 21h).

The event can be attended in a hybrid format, in-person (Penha campus) and is also transmitted in STREAMING through the Univ. Algarve YouTube channel. More details will be provided at the WeOcean webpage close to the date of the event.

Attendance to WeOcean is free of charge, but requires prior application for registration!
