Pedro Leitão talks about Predicting gear and métier used in a multi-gear coastal fleet
KEYWORDS: Multi-gear fleet; Fishing effort; Machine learning; Random forest; Gear prediction
Knowledge of the gear and métier used in multi-gear fisheries is crucial to infer fisheries impacts. Still, the lack of data in the Portuguese fleet compromises this task. This talk focuses on how we can predict main fishing gear or métier used in each fishing trip for the Portuguese multi-gear coastal fleet based on landing records (species caught, port, and month of landing). This improves the knowledge of the dynamics of this fleet and allows us to quantify the impact of each gear type.
From the university of Lisbon with a master’s in marine Ecology to the IPMA, Pedro Leitão started as an on-board scientific observer. He is now exploring the potential of fisheries dependent data to support scientific advice in multi-gear fisheries.
Catarina Marreiros speaks about From sturgeon to humans: Gla rich Protein for Cardiovascular Risk Assessment
KEYWORDS: Cardiovascular Disease; Circulating Biomarker; Gla Rich Protein
Gla Rich protein (GRP), firstly found in sturgeon fish, is a vitamin K-dependent protein known to function as an inhibitor of pathological calcification and anti-inflammatory agent. However, the lack of knowledge on serum levels for GRP in apparently healthy individuals constitutes a main constraint for its establishment as a biomarker for cardiovascular disease risk. The aim is to unveil and report phisiological levels of circulating GRP in humans.
Catarina completed her Master in Pharmaceutical Siences in 2017 by University of Algarve. Currently she's in Biomedical Sciences PhD, focusing on the development of a biomarker for cardiovascular disease risk assessment, she's also a member of FBP group in CCMAR.
