An unusual property of molecular oxygen is that the ground electronic state has triplet configuration and the lowest excited state has singlet configuration, each with unique chemical reactivities. The seminar will focus on singlet oxygen, how it is generated, spectroscopy and applications, such as pressure sensing to aid airplane design. The phototoxicity of singlet oxygen is exploited in photo-dynamic therapy for cancer treatment for which heavy-atom-free photosensitizers were developed.
