Our researcher Monika Jadwiga Szynaka has been invited to join OYSTER, an international network supporting early career researchers in Marine Sciences. Monika's membership highlights the recognition of her work and strengthens CCMAR's presence within the network.

OYSTER (Orienting Young Scientists of Euromarine) aims to support early career researchers by providing opportunities for career development, networking, and funding of projects led by young scientists. The network also seeks to represent and address the challenges faced by professionals at the start of their careers in the field of Marine Sciences.

Monika

In addition to her scientific work, Monika is involved in a volunteer working group at CCMAR dedicated to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. This group, composed of 19 members from 9 different nationalities (from Europe, Asia, North America, and South America), works to ensure that everyone at CCMAR feels included, safe, and valued. The team discusses and implements initiatives to foster a diverse and welcoming environment at the centre.

Since 2022, Monika has served as an invited member of the Working Group on Fishing Technology and Fish Behaviour of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), based in Copenhagen, Denmark. This position reflects her expertise and the international recognition of her work in fishing technology and fish behaviour.

In the scientific sphere, Monika coordinates the Trammel Net Selectivity (TramSel) project, which aims to reduce bycatch in trammel nets. The project introduces a simple modification that elevates the standard bottom set net, with direct input from fishermen, to increase the likelihood of future adoption of this sustainable practice.

In 2024, Monika contributed to three key works that reflect her commitment to marine sustainability and conservation:

1.    Scientific Publication:
Reducing invertebrate by-catch in a coastal fishery using a raised monofilament trammel net (Maio de 2024).
Authors: Monika Szynaka, Pedro Monteiro, Karim Erzini, Aida Campos, entre outros.
This paper discusses methods to reduce bycatch of non-target species in trammel nets, contributing to more sustainable fishing practices.
DOI: 10.17895/ICES.PUB.24299146
2.    ICES Workshop Report - WKECOVME:
ICES Workshop to evaluate long-term biodiversity/ecosystem benefits of NEAFC closed and restricted areas (January 2024).
This report evaluates the long-term benefits of closed and restricted areas in the Northeast Atlantic, focusing on biodiversity and marine ecosystems.
DOI: 10.17895/ices.pub.24198771
3.   ICES Workshop Report - WKING2:
Workshop 2 on Innovative Fishing Gear (WKING2) (2024).
This workshop explored new technologies and innovations in fishing gear, with a focus on creating and implementing more sustainable and efficient tools to reduce the environmental impact of fishing.
DOI: 10.17895/ICES.PUB.24299146

Monika's invitation to join OYSTER further strengthens CCMAR’s role as a leading institution in scientific research. Monika will be an active representative of the centre, contributing to international initiatives and bringing new opportunities to the institution.
