This is Luís Salvador, a passionate science communicator and creative mind who is joining CCMAR's Science Communication Unit. ‘Mica’ to his old university friends, Luís brings a unique blend of experience in branding, visual communication and artistic projects. With a degree in Biology from UAlg, his work is aligned with his values: protecting biodiversity, valuing rural communities and raising awareness of climate change. At CCMAR, he will focus on developing scientific communication for the Restoreseagrass Project and supporting institutional publicity initiatives. Outside of work, Luís likes to explore and be creative, mixing his love of birdwatching, photography, writing and illustration with his love of outdoor activities such as bodyboarding and slacklining.

  1. Tell us the name you want to be known by at CCMAR
Luís, but don't be surprised if people call me Mica in the corridors, especially those who took the course at the same time as me.

  2. Tell us a bit about the work you'll be doing at CCMAR
I'll be responsible for developing the scientific communication of the Restoreseagrass Project and also collaborating with CCMAR's institutional communication team, both in the creation of written and visual content and in the organisation of ocean awareness/literacy events.

  3. What do you like to do outside of work?
Exploration and creativity always go hand in hand. The former involves exploring trails on foot or by bike, always alternating between the camera and binoculars (since I'm what they call a ‘bird watcher’ in my hometown). The creative vein eventually flows into photography, writing and illustration. I start the day by keeping my body and mind active through meditation, physical exercise, bodyboarding or challenging my balance on the slackline.

  4. What did you do before joining us?
Working at CCMAR came from wanting to refocus my career according to my values, since it was at UAlg that I graduated in Biology. Over the last five years, I've worked as a creative in the field of branding and visual communication in Amsterdam. In addition, I've also developed artistic projects ranging from illustration to writing and photography, always with an eye on valuing rural communities, protecting biodiversity and raising awareness of the effect of climate change.
