CCMAR is sad to announce the death of Mercedes González-Wangüemert, a researcher who was part of the CCMAR team for several years and made a significant contribution to advancing knowledge in marine biology and conservation, with a special focus on lesser-known species such as sea cucumbers.

Her pioneering work laid the foundations for cultivating these species as an alternative to harvesting them in the wild, an activity she continued to develop after her return to Murcia, where she set up her own company.

With a PhD in Biology from the University of Murcia, where she also taught, she worked as an FAO advisor on various projects to support development in fishing and women's communities in African countries, some of which were in cooperation with CCMAR.

At this difficult time, CCMAR expresses its solidarity with the family, friends and colleagues of Mercedes González-Wangüemert.
