Several OC2 Researchers and PhD students had the privilege of attending in and presenting their work at the prestigious annual General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU), a key event in our field. This year's meeting was held from 14 to 19 April in Vienna, Austria.

1. Why did we choose to attend EGU 2024?

EGU’s annual meeting brings together scientists from all over the world working in a wide spectrum of earth sciences and oceanography and is therefore a treasure trove of knowledge. It features numerous sessions of oral and poster communications, with this year's event showcasing more than 19,000 abstracts. The meeting is also enriched by the many Medal Lectures given by outstanding researchers that offer significant scientific value.

2. What was the highlight of your visit?

The CCMAR/IPMA team discussed the results of various projects, from ICW3P to the first results of IODP Expedition 397 in the Iberian Margin, the results of different PhD projects presented by several PhD students, financially supported by different entities.

Apart from scientific work and networking, the CCMAR researchers visited the center of Vienna and were astonished by the grandiosity of its architecture and history, as well as by the sounds of many musicians who played around the city for visitors.

3. Does this visit open new opportunities for you and other CCMAR researchers?

Like any other major conference, it provided an opportunity to present and discuss emergent observations and ideas, and an ideal environment for scientific discussions and potential plans for new scientific initiatives. This participation constituted a unique opportunity for all the CCMAR researchers to learn and grow.
