At the University of Algarve’s Anniversary Ceremony, one moment stood out in particular: the awarding of the title of Emeritus Professor to Professor Adelino Canário, President of the CCMAR Board. The distinction recognises his remarkable academic and scientific career and the decisive contribution he has made to strengthening both the University and research in Portugal.
Following the tribute, Professor Canário addressed the formal session, emphasising that the future of the University of the Algarve depends on greater openness to the world, stronger support for students – especially the most vulnerable and international students – and a continued commitment to science and experimental teaching as structural pillars of the institution. He also warned of the urgent need to increase investment in research within the region, noting that the Algarve currently invests “three to four times less” than the national average, an imbalance that may threaten teaching quality, the University’s attractiveness, and its ability to retain and recruit scientific talent.
The ceremony also marked the inauguration of Alexandra Teodósio as the new Rector, the first woman ever to assume the role. A senior researcher at CCMAR, she presented the strategic plan “Horizon 2030”, centred on sustainability, inclusion, and strengthening globally relevant research. She highlighted the need for a collective mobilisation involving research centres, municipalities, businesses, and civil society. She also noted that UAlg is already an international reference in these areas, but stressed that “the future demands an even stronger collective effort”, bringing together centres such as CCMAR, local authorities, the private sector, and the wider community.
The distinction of both researchers underscores CCMAR’s central role in the scientific life of the University of the Algarve, and in advancing marine research with national and international impact.
