Gabriel Bombo will join the MarBiotech group as an MSc student to do his thesis about two microalgae strains collected in different regions of Algarve's coast.

Tell us a bit about the work you'll be doing at CCMAR.
I will be doing my master thesis with the MarBiotech group, where I will be working with two microalgae strains collected in different regions of Algarve's coast, to identify the species, analyse and optimize their growth and examine the carotenoids’ profile. After this, I will try to scale-up the cultures for flat panels or raceways.

What were you doing before you joined us?
In the first semester of my MSc in Marine Biology at UAlg, I worked as a volunteer in the Marbiotech research group. In the second semester, I enrolled in an internship at the same group, where I helped isolate and identify species from samples collected through the ALGARED+ project. At the same time, I started to work on a project from CIMA to analyse phytoplankton from Guadiana estuarine waters in controlled eutrophication systems, for a subject from the MSc in Marine Biology, guided by the researcher Rita Domingues and Professor Helena Galvão.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
In my free time I like to go cycling or watch a movie and when I have a free day I usually go to the beach.
