Melina Coelho da Silva has joined CCMAR to study chemical communication in fishes, more specifically to identify dominance pheromones in the Siamese fighting fish.

Tell us a bit about the work you are/will be doing at CCMAR?
I’ll be a PhD student in a cotutelle programme between the University of Saint Joseph (Institute of Science and Environment – Macao) and the University of the Algarve (CCCMAR – Portugal). I’ll be integrated in the Comparative Endocrinology and Integrative Biology group at CCMAR and study chemical communication in fishes. More specifically I intend to identify dominance pheromones in the Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens).

What were you doing before you joined us?
Previously, I was already associated to CCMAR. I did part of my Master´s degree in here and afterwards I participated in several practical activities to improve my knowledge and skills in numerous techniques.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I like to spend my free time with my friends and family, mainly playing board games. I also love walks with my dogs, outdoor activities and Nature itself. More recently, I’ve been investing in more creative activities, such as painting.
