Title: Smells Fishy: the 'What?', 'How?' and 'Why?' of olfaction in fish
Speaker: Peter C Hubbard
(CME-CCMAR)
Abstract: Fish, like mammals, are vertebrates; yet, they live in water. This means that the olfactory system of fish shares many similarities with mammals but, in many respects, is markedly different. This brief tour of fishy olfaction will attempt to explain (as far as we know!) what fish can smell, how they can smell these things, and why this matters to them - and us - using some examples from our own work. I hope that you will never look at the nose of a fish in the same light again.
