iNOVPESCA

Project Summary

The iNOVPESCA project aims to improve the conservation status of cetaceans and other protected species (e.g., marine turtles), as well as mitigate issues associated with the interaction of these species with coastal fisheries, taking as an example those operating off the coast of the Algarve.

Project Activities

The main components of this work encompass two important aspects:

  1. Conservation – avoiding and reducing animal mortality and promoting more sustainable fishing behaviors;
  2. Socioeconomic – preventing economic losses to fishermen by reducing damage interaction in fishing gear and catch.

The practical fieldwork approach is developed through the following actions:

  • Data collection in target fisheries (encircling nets, gillnets, and trammel nets) through surveys and observer onboardings;
  • Participatory meetings with all stakeholders (fishermen, scientists, government entities) to collaboratively exchange information on possible mitigation measures;
  • Monitoring trials of mitigation measures suitable for each fishery.

All developed ideas and their results will be used to suggest best practices and propose technical and management solutions to reduce interactions between Algarve coastal fisheries and target protected marine species.
