Project Activities

The mackerel is one of the most underappreciated species in the Algarve, the widespread use of mackerel for human consumption would be a significant asset to the economy of this productive sector.

In this regard we propose to carry out a series of studies to determine this species breeding season and lipid content, in order to establish sizes of first maturity and consequently appropriate minimum landing sizes, as well as the most suitable time of year for its consumption.

Simultaneously, it is intended to promote a series of events aimed at disseminating traditional and innovative recipes whose main ingredient is mackerel. These actions will promote and valorize this type of fishery resources, while simultaneously encouraging sustainable fishing practices.

The CAVALA project is funded by the PROMAR program, GAC Barlavento Axis 4 (2014-2015), in partnership with BARLAPESCAS, Algarve School of Hospitality and Tourism, Center for Innovation and Food Technology CITA-ISE University of Algarve, RUA - University Radio of Algarve, DOCAPESCA, and Conserveira do Sul. It also has the support of the Municipalities and Marinas of the Algarve's Barlavento region and the company Algarfresco.

In 2015, a new phase of the project begins, with funding from the PROMAR program, now linked to the GAC of the Algarve's Sotavento region.
