The third edition of the Marine Forest Festival takes place from May 21 to 28 at the emblematic Porto da Baleeira in Sagres. This unique event celebrates the region's marine biodiversity through a diverse program that brings together science, education, art and the community.
A festival with purpose
The Marine Forest Festival's mission is to publicize the importance of these underwater ecosystems made up of algae, corals and other species which, like terrestrial forests, play a crucial role in oxygen production, biodiversity conservation and carbon capture, contributing to the fight against climate change.
According to Alexandra Teodósio, vice-rector of the University of Algarve and researcher at CCMAR, the event is also an opportunity for students to experience science in a real context, with a teaching approach based on problem-based learning methodology, in direct contact with local communities and the marine ecosystems of Sagres.
What to expect?
Over the course of a week, the festival offers various activities for all ages, including:
- Scientific talks and educational sessions
- Dolphin and seaweed watching
- Workshops and hands-on activities
- Guided dives in the marine forests
- Craft fair and local gastronomy
Highlight: “OceanArt: Science to Art” exhibition
The OceanArt: Science to Art exhibition will open on May 17 at 5pm at Forte do Beliche in Sagres and will run until June 15th. The exhibition brings together more than 30 works by artists and scientists, in a fusion of art, science and environmental activism, with the aim of raising public awareness of ocean protection.
