“Artists and scientists are not so different. Maybe the way they see the world is.”

The “OceanArt: Science to Art” exhibition, with the support of the United Nations as part of the Ocean Decade for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), will be on display at Forte do Beliche in Sagres from May 17 to June 15, 2025, as part of the 3rd edition of the Marine Forests Festival.

The opening will take place on May 17 at 5pm, curated by Teresa Cerveira Borges, a researcher at the Algarve Sea Science Center (CCMAR) at the University of the Algarve.

The arts and sciences are often seen as separate domains, but artists and scientists share something essential: curiosity and the desire to understand and transform the world.
Both are fundamental to building a more aware, sensitive and informed society.

“OceanArt: Science to Art” is the result of a collaboration between thirteen artists and scientists, who have joined forces to give voice to the ocean and its urgent needs: the loss of biodiversity, pollution, overexploitation of resources and the growing impacts of climate change. The exhibition aims to inspire action and mobilize society to protect and regenerate our Global Ocean.

On display will be more than 30 works of painting, sculpture and photography, created after the artists took part in the “Inform to Inspire” session, promoted by CCMAR researchers.
Each artistic piece is accompanied by relevant scientific information, creating a unique symbiosis between knowledge and creative expression.

In addition, the exhibition also features scientific photographs associated with CCMAR research projects, which reveal the beauty and complexity of marine ecosystems, a true celebration of art in science.

We are counting on your presence.
