João Nuno Monteiro has developed his scientific career around marine ecology, carcinology, and fisheries management, with a strong focus on improving the sustainability of traditional Portuguese fisheries. As a PhD student at the University of Algarve and CCMAR, his research has centred on the European green crab (Carcinus maenas), a species of ecological and economic importance along the Portuguese coast.
Through an interdisciplinary approach, João has investigated the biological and fisheries dimensions of this resource, integrating studies on population dynamics, growth, and reproduction with fishing gear characteristics such as catches and selectivity, as well as socioeconomic patterns linked to the fishery.
His doctoral work contributes directly to evidence-based fisheries management in Portugal. The findings of his thesis have already supported national regulatory changes aimed at increasing both profitability and sustainability of the green crab fishery, including the reduction of the minimum landing size, implementation of gear mesh regulations, and establishment of catch limits.
He is currently preparing to reach an important milestone in his academic journey with the defence of his PhD thesis, entitled:
Population dynamics, growth, and reproduction of the green crab (Carcinus maenas) in Portugal: Contributions to fisheries management
This research highlights how scientific knowledge can be translated into practical policy solutions, reinforcing the value of integrating ecology, fisheries science, and socioeconomic considerations in the management of marine resources.
Let’s support João at this decisive moment in his scientific career!
