During the month of September, our Scientific Diving Centre was involved in an underwater archaeology campaign that took place at the wreck site of a B-24 bomber off Praia de Faro.

Between the 2nd and 19th, our scientific diving team provided logistical support and ensured the safety of the dives carried out, collaborating with a team of American and Portuguese archaeologists, as well as US military veterans.

The aim of this campaign was to search for traces of the crew of the B-24 bomber that crashed into the sea in 1943, during the Second World War. The initiative is part of a wider effort to research and recover underwater military history, promoted by the US organisation Ships of Discovery. As well as contributing to the preservation of historical and underwater heritage, this campaign has also had a special meaning for the veterans involved, who seek to honour the memory of the airmen who disappeared more than 80 years ago.
