Research dedicated to global and national scopes, including:
- Understanding differences between MPAs (leader of the regulation-based classification system for MPAs and zones; co-leader of the protection levels component of the MPA guide) and their various expected outcomes (meta-analysis);
- Experienced in case studies (Portugal, Cuba, Brazil, USA) and global assessments;
- Focus on the study of the effectiveness of MPAs (ecological but also social outcomes) and correlates; multi-use MPAs and artisanal fisheries; protection levels; management practices and effectiveness; vulnerability to climate change; users' participation and legitimacy; commercial species ecology and protection effects (to fish assemblages and to fishers);
- Designing, planning, monitoring and evaluating MPAs and different conservation strategies.
